Why Small Cap

The case for Small Cap investing in India

Small cap companies — those ranked below the top 250 by market cap — are India's growth engine. They are where the next Titan, Bajaj Finance or Page Industries were once hiding. For patient, long-term investors, small cap mutual funds offer the highest wealth-creation potential in any asset class.

But they also carry significant risk, volatility and require a minimum 7–10 year horizon. CRN India gives you the research and knowledge to decide if small cap is right for you — and if so, how to invest wisely.

⚠️ Important: Higher return = higher risk. Small cap funds can fall 40–60% during corrections. Always invest with a 7–10 year minimum horizon and a clear understanding of the volatility involved.

How to Choose

Pick the right small cap fund

With dozens of small cap funds available, choosing wisely is the most important decision. Here is exactly what to evaluate before investing in any small cap fund.

  • Consistent outperformance of benchmark over 5+ years
  • Fund manager's experience and tenure at the fund
  • Portfolio concentration — top 10 holdings % of AUM
  • Expense ratio — direct vs regular plan difference
  • Maximum drawdown in 2018 and 2020 corrections
  • AUM size — too large limits small cap agility
  • Rolling return consistency, not just point-to-point

Every term a small cap investor needs to know — in plain language.

Market Cap
Share price × total shares outstanding. Determines if a company is small, mid or large cap.
NAV
Net Asset Value — the daily price per unit of a mutual fund scheme.
CAGR
Compound Annual Growth Rate — the annualised return of an investment over a period.

Sharpe Ratio
Return per unit of risk taken — higher is better for comparing funds of similar category.

Common Questions

Small Cap FAQs

Honest answers to the questions every small cap investor asks.

How much should I invest in small cap funds?
Most advisors suggest keeping small cap allocation to 15–25% of your total equity portfolio. The exact % depends on your age, risk appetite and time horizon. Younger investors with 10+ years can take more exposure. Never invest money you may need in the next 5 years in small cap funds.
What is the minimum SIP amount for small cap funds?
Most small cap funds allow SIP starting from ₹500–₹1,000 per month. You can start small and increase using a Step-Up SIP feature which most fund houses now offer.
Should I stop my SIP when the market falls?
No — this is one of the most costly mistakes small cap investors make. When markets fall, your SIP buys more units at lower prices. This rupee cost averaging is exactly why SIP works so well for volatile categories like small cap. Stopping during a fall defeats the entire purpose.
Direct or Regular plan in small cap — which to choose?
If you can research and invest through platforms like MF Central, Kuvera or Zerodha Coin — always choose Direct. The 0.5–1% expense ratio difference compounds to lakhs over 15–20 years in small cap funds. Regular plans only make sense if you have a truly active advisor rebalancing your portfolio.
How are small cap fund gains taxed in India?
Small cap mutual funds are treated as equity funds for tax purposes. Gains held for more than 1 year up to ₹1.25 lakh per year are tax-free (LTCG). Above that, 12.5% LTCG tax applies. Gains sold within 1 year attract 20% STCG tax on the entire amount.
Which is the best small cap fund in India right now?
There is no single "best" fund — it depends on consistency, fund manager track record, AUM size and your goals. Nippon India Small Cap, SBI Small Cap and HDFC Small Cap have been consistently strong over 10 years, but always verify the latest data before investing. Our fund guide section gives a deeper comparison.
